Wonder Trade Guide - Shiny Odds, Hidden Abilities & Mechanics
Complete Wonder Trade guide for Polished Crystal. Trade any Pokémon for a random one at the same level in Goldenrod. 4x shiny rate (1/1024), 33% Hidden Ability chance, held items possible, 50/50 gender ratio. Offline Wonder Trade system explained with full mechanics and optimal strategies.

Introduction
Polished Crystal has its own version of Wonder Trade that works offline - basically emulating the Gen VI–VII online feature without needing any connectivity. You trade a Pokémon and get a random one back at the same level, with boosted chances of it being Shiny, having a Hidden Ability, or holding an item.
It's a fun way to mix up your team or hunt for specific things you might not want to breed for or completing your dex.
How It Works
Source: wonder_trade.asm — engine/events/wonder_trade.asm, valid_level.asm — data/pokemon/valid_levels.asm, variant_forms.asm — data/pokemon/variant_forms.asm
- Head to the machine behind the clerk in the center of Goldenrod PCC
- Trade in any Pokémon
- The game checks its level and instantly returns a random Pokémon at that same level
That's it!
What Makes It Special
Here's where Wonder Trade gets interesting:
- Shininess: 4× the normal shiny rate (1/1024 instead of 1/4096)
- Abilities: Equal 1/3 chance of Ability #1, Ability #2, or Hidden Ability
- Held items: Chance scales with level, plus a small chance for rare items (works similar to Pickup)
- Gender: 50/50 male or female regardless of the species' normal gender ratio
- OT: Randomly selected from internal name lists
The Hidden Ability thing is huge - normally those are a pain to get, but Wonder Trade gives you a 33% chance!
Egg Trading
Unlike the main series games, you can trade an Egg and get a random Egg back. Neat if you want to hatch something unexpected.
What You Can't Get
Wonder Trade won't give you:
- Legendaries or other static encounter Pokémon
- Unown
- Eggs (unless you traded an Egg in)
Available Pokémon

Here's everything you can receive through Wonder Trade. The level of the Pokémon you trade determines what's available - you'll only get species that can exist at that level.

Held Item Chances
Source: wonder_trade/held_items.asm — data/events/wonder_trade/held_items.asm, battle/abilities.asm — engine/battle/abilities.asm
The higher the level, the better your item odds. At low levels you'll usually get nothing, but higher levels guarantee something and open up rarer items.
