If you are planning a hunt, the useful question is not only “what is the shiny rate?” but also which roll you are making: a wild or static encounter, an egg, or a Wonder Trade Pokémon. This guide puts the exact Polished Crystal rates first, then explains which bonuses apply and what you need to unlock them.

These values are specific to the current Polished Crystal implementation. They are not universal Pokémon rates, and a bonus that applies to an egg does not automatically apply to every other encounter type.

Quick answer: shiny odds

The base rate is 1/4096 per roll. The listed maximum for breeding is 8/4096 (about 1/512 per egg) with both the Shiny Charm and Masuda Method. Wonder Trade uses 4/4096 (about 1/1024 per received Pokémon) and is not improved by those bonuses. Compare the methods in the shiny odds table.

A rate is the chance for one independent roll, not a promise that a shiny appears within a fixed number of attempts. For example, 512 eggs at 1/512 odds is not a guarantee; it is 512 separate rolls. If you are comparing another game or ROM version, verify its mechanics instead of reusing these numbers.

Which shiny method should I use?

Use a wild or static encounter when you need a particular Pokémon in its normal encounter. Use breeding when you want to combine the Shiny Charm with the Masuda Method for the highest listed egg rate. Wonder Trade has its own improved roll, but the breeding bonuses do not apply to received Pokémon.

This rate applies universally, meaning shiny odds are identical whether you are walking in tall grass, receiving an egg, or encountering a legendary Pokémon, unless a bonus explicitly applies.

Wonder Trade

Wonder Trade Shiny Rate: 4 / 4096 (~1 / 1024)

Pokémon received through

Wonder Trade have an increased base shiny rate of 4/4096.

• This rate is not affected by bonuses
• Shiny Charm and Masuda Method do not apply
• Each Wonder Trade Pokémon is rolled independently

Wonder Trade offers strong shiny odds early on but cannot be optimized further.

Because Wonder Trade odds cannot be improved, it is best used as a passive shiny chance rather than a dedicated hunting method.

Bonuses

Two major bonuses can increase your shiny encounter rate. These bonuses stack when applicable.

Shiny Charm (+2 / 4096)

• How to obtain: Complete the Pokédex and speak to Professor Oak in Pallet Town. *You do not need to catch multiple forms, one form satisfies the requirement!
• Effect: Adds +2/4096 to your shiny rate → 3/4096 (~1 / 1365)
• Applies to:
  • Wild encounters
  • Breeding
  • Static encounters (including legendaries)

Masuda Method (+5 / 4096)

• How to use: Breed two Pokémon with different OTIDs.
• Effect: Adds +5/4096 to egg shiny odds → 6/4096 (~1 / 683)

Notes

• Optimal Breeding Strategy: Combine a OITD Ditto with the Shiny Charm for maximum breeding efficiency. This setup provides 1/512 odds per egg, the best achievable rate in the game.
• Static Encounters: Legendary and static Pokémon can be shiny and are affected by the Shiny Charm. Save before the encounter to shiny hunt.
• Independent Rolls: Every encounter or egg is a fresh roll. There is no pity system or streak-based increase!
• IV Independence: Shininess in Polished Crystal does not depend on IVs. Shiny Pokémon can have any IV spread, including perfect IVs!
