Gift Pokémon

Introduction

Polished Crystal gives you quite a few Pokémon for free as you play. Some are simple NPC gifts you pick up during the story. Others need you to win a battle, answer questions correctly, or clear the Elite Four first.

Your Starter

The first gift Pokémon you get is your Starter. Professor Elm gives you a choice between Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile at his lab in New Bark Town. All three are Level 5 and hold an Oran Berry.

Lyra picks the starter that's weak to yours. If you pick Cyndaquil, Lyra takes Chikorita. If you pick Totodile, Lyra takes Cyndaquil. If you pick Chikorita, Lyra takes Totodile. Your rival steals the one that's strong against yours.

Togepi Egg

You get the Togepi Egg from Elm's aide at the Violet City Pokémon Center after you earn the Zephyr Badge from Falkner. It's a standard egg with no special moves or DVs.

Odd Egg

The Odd Egg is a special gift you receive from the Day-Care Man inside the Day Care on Route 34. It always hatches into a Shiny baby Pokémon with its Hidden Ability, a Quirky nature, and the move Dizzy Punch.

There are 10 possible species, each with different hatch rates:

Kenya the Spearow

Kenya is a Level 10 female Spearow you get from Randy, an officer at the gate between Route 35 and Goldenrod City. She comes in a Net Ball with Flower Mail attached — Randy asks you to deliver her to his friend on Route 31. After you complete the delivery, you can return to Randy for an HP Up as a reward.

Eevee

Bill gives you an Eevee at the Ecruteak City Pokémon Center. It's Level 5, comes in a Great Ball, and arrives with Eon Mail from Prof. Oak that reads "Please keep this Pokémon safe!" Your party must not be full to receive it.

Shuckie the Shuckle

Shuckie is a Level 25 male Shuckle you can get from Kirk in Mania's House in Cianwood City. He comes in a Net Ball, holds Berry Juice, and knows Poison Jab as a bonus move.

Shuckie is technically a borrowed Pokémon. Kirk will ask for him back each time you visit, but if Shuckie's happiness is high enough, Kirk will let you keep him permanently.

  • Nickname: Shuckie
  • OT: Kirk
  • Level: 25
  • Gender: Male
  • Held Item: Berry Juice
  • Ball: Net Ball

Dratini

You can get a Level 15 Dratini from the elder at the Dragon Shrine in Dragon's Den after earning the Rising Badge. It comes in an Ultra Ball and holds a Sitrus Berry.

Before receiving it, the elder asks you five questions. If you answer all of them correctly, your Dratini will know ExtremeSpeed. If you get any wrong, you still get the Dratini, but without that move.

Since Celadon City is in Kanto, you need to beat the Elite Four before you can access it.

Magikarp

You can get a special Magikarp from Prof. Westwood at Celadon University after passing the Hyper Test, a six-question quiz. This Magikarp has a unique masked form, holds an Eviolite, comes in an Ultra Ball, and knows Dragon Rage. The test can only be attempted once per day.

Shiny Ditto

If you bring a Red Scale to Mr. Pokémon's House on Route 30, he'll trade it for a special Ditto. This Ditto is Shiny with perfect DVs, its Hidden Ability, and holds an Everstone. It comes in a Premier Ball at Level 5.

This is an excellent breeding partner thanks to its perfect stats and Hidden Ability.

Lyra's Starter Egg

After Lyra drops off an Egg at the Day Care on Route 34, you can pick it up from the Day-Care Lady. This Egg hatches into the same starter Pokémon that Lyra chose at the beginning of the game — the one that's weak to yours.

Rival's Starter Egg

After you beat your rival at Mt. Moon, he appears in Dragon's Den B1F and gives you an Egg. This Egg hatches into the starter Pokémon your rival stole — the one that's strong against yours.

After receiving the Egg, the rival appears here for rematches on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Kanto Starters

After you beat the Elite Four, you can get all three Kanto Starters from three different NPCs. All are Level 10 and hold a Sitrus Berry.

Prof. Ivy (Shamouti Island Pokémon Center) — You pick one of three: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle.

Prof. Oak (Oak's Lab, Pallet Town) — Gives you the starter that's strong against the one you picked from Ivy.

Yellow (Indigo Plateau Pokémon Center) — Gives you the remaining starter. You must defeat Yellow in battle first.

Mystri Egg (Special Togepi)

At the Mystri Stage, accessed through the Sinjoh Ruins, you can get a very special Togepi Egg after defeating Cynthia in battle. She also gives you Wise Glasses after the fight.

This is the best Togepi you can get in the game:

  • Shiny with perfect DVs
  • Hidden Ability
  • Gender: Female
  • Moves: Growl, Charm, Moonblast, Aeroblast

Moonblast and Aeroblast are exclusive event moves that this Togepi cannot learn any other way.

Conclusion

Polished Crystal has a great variety of gift Pokémon you can collect throughout your adventure. From your Starter to the Mystri Egg, these gifts can help you build a strong team and add some truly unique Pokémon to your collection. Make sure to explore all the locations and complete the necessary tasks to claim them all.
