Let's be honest here, tier lists are inherently subjective. That's the point though! I've made my list of abilities that I feel are most useful. I have tried to rank these based on how they are used in the game and not just battling only.
S Tier
These are the abilities that consistently warp how battles play out. If a Pokémon has one of these, it's often worth building around.
Trapping Abilities
Being able to prevent your opponent from switching is very powerful and great for catching legendaries. With these you can trap a weaker wild Pokémon to catch or prevent your opponent from switching out on you.
Shadow Tag: Prevents the foe from escaping.
Arena Trap: Prevents the foe from fleeing (grounded Pokémon only).
Weather Setters
These moves all basically act as a fifth move slot for that Pokemon that automatically starts a weather condition. Weather will also affect other Pokemon on the field and also Pokemon that you have switched in later meaning they are great for setting up a team!
Drizzle: Summons rain when the Pokémon enters battle.
Drought: Summons sunlight when the Pokémon enters battle.
Sand Stream: Summons a sandstorm when the Pokémon enters battle.
Snow Warning: Summons hail when the Pokémon enters battle.
Stat Manipulation
These abilities either will increase your stats or decrease your opponnents
Speed Boost: Increases the Pokémon's Speed at the end of each turn.
Regenerator: Restores a portion of the Pokémon's HP when it switches out.
Poison Heal: Restores HP when poisoned instead of taking damage.
Intimidate: Lowers the opponent's Attack stat upon entering battle.
Multiscale: Reduces damage taken when at full HP.
Gorilla Tactics: Boosts Attack but locks the Pokémon into one move.
Battle-Warping Abilities
These abilities will basically change the rules of the battle. When played correctly, they can be borderline broken.
Magic Guard: Prevents all damage except from direct attacks.
Wonder Guard: Only super effective moves can hit the Pokémon.
Parental Bond: Allows the Pokémon to hit twice with each attack.
Imposter: Transforms into the opponent upon entering battle.
Prankster: Gives priority to status moves.
Magic Bounce: Reflects status moves back at the opponent.
Mold Breaker: Allows moves to ignore the opponent's abilities.
A Tier
These are still excellent abilities... but they either require more setup, have narrower applications, or just don't quite reach the "build your team around this" level of S Tier to me.
Power Boosters
These make your moves hit harder! The difference between having one of these and not can be the differernce between having to use 1 moves or 2 to knock out your opponent.
Adaptability: Increases the power of same-type moves.
Technician: Boosts the power of weaker moves.
Sheer Force: Increases the power of moves with secondary effects but removes those effects.
Tinted Lens: Powers up "not very effective" moves.
Skill Link: Maximizes the number of hits for multi-strike moves.
Analytic: Boosts move power if the Pokémon moves last.
Sharpness: Increases the power of slicing moves.
Pixilate: Turns Normal-type moves into Fairy-type moves and boosts their power.
Tough Claws: Increases the power of contact moves.
Thick Fat: Reduces damage from Fire- and Ice-type moves.
Armor Tail: Reduces the power of super effective moves.
Flash Fire: Powers up the Pokémon's Fire-type moves if hit by a Fire-type move.
Mind's Eye: Prevents the Pokémon from being affected by priority moves.
Stat Changers
These abilities will interact with stats in useful ways by either ignoring them, reversing them, or reversing the fact that they help instead of hurt you!
Unaware: Ignores the opponent's stat changes.
Contrary: Reverses stat changes.
Swift Swim: Doubles the Pokémon's Speed in rain.
Chlorophyll: Doubles the Pokémon's Speed in sunlight.
Sand Rush: Doubles the Pokémon's Speed in a sandstorm.
Download: Adjusts the Pokémon's stats based on the opponent's stats.
Moxie: Increases Attack after knocking out a Pokémon.
Defiant: Boosts Attack when a stat is lowered.
Competitive: Boosts Special Attack when a stat is lowered.
Fur Coat: Doubles the Pokémon's Defense.
Water Absorb: Restores HP if hit by a Water-type move.
Volt Absorb: Restores HP if hit by an Electric-type move.
Guts: Boosts Attack if the Pokémon has a status condition.
Marvel Scale: Boosts Defense if the Pokémon has a status condition.
Immunities and Utility
These abilities provide immunities or other utility that can be very helpful in battles
Neutralizing Gas: Negates the effects of other Pokémon's abilities.
Levitate: Grants immunity to Ground-type moves.
Trace: Copies the opponent's ability when entering battle.
B Tier
These are good, reliable abilities. They won't carry a team on their own, buuut they provide consistent value and can be the difference in some battles!
Speed and Turn Order
Speed control is always valuable so you could argue that these are like, B+ tier. All of these help you outspeed others OR punish opponents who try to go first.
Inner Focus: Prevents flinching.
Quick Draw: May allow the Pokémon to move first.
Quick Feet: Boosts Speed if the Pokémon has a status condition.
Slush Rush: Doubles the Pokémon's Speed in hail.
Tangling Hair: Lowers the Speed of opponents that make contact.
Unburden: Doubles the Pokémon's Speed if it loses its held item.
Damage Prevention
Hey, survivability matters! You have to keep your Pokemon alive to win battles. Each of these abilities help your Pokémon last longer in battle.
Clear Body: Prevents stat reduction by opponents.
White Smoke: Prevents stat reduction by opponents.
Filter: Reduces damage from super effective moves.
Solid Rock: Reduces damage from super effective moves.
Sturdy: Prevents being knocked out in one hit.
Overcoat: Protects the Pokémon from weather damage and powder moves.
Pressure: Increases the PP usage of the opponent's moves.
Weather Beneficiaries
While these abilities don't set weather themselves, if your team runs a weather setter already, these can provide some useful synergy!
Sand Force: Boosts the power of Rock-, Ground-, and Steel-type moves in a sandstorm.
Hydration: Heals status conditions in rain.
Dry Skin: Restores HP in rain, but causes damage in sunlight.
Redirectors
These abilities can turn would-be weaknesses into advantages by absorbing specific attack types. Lantern for example would be weak to electric as a water type but instead it has a stat increase. In other games these abilities could also be useful in double battles, but that's not a thing in Polished Crystal.
Lightning Rod: Draws in all Electric-type moves to boost Special Attack.
Sap Sipper: Draws in all Grass-type moves to boost Attack.
Offensive Boosters
Maybe a bit more niche than A Tier boosters... These still solid when you have the planning done to make the most.
Iron Fist: Boosts the power of punching moves.
Reckless: Boosts the power of moves that have recoil damage.
Sniper: Boosts the power of critical hits.
Steely Spirit: Boosts the power of Steel-type moves for the Pokémon and its allies.
Mega Launcher: Boosts the power of pulse moves.
Serene Grace: Doubles the chances of secondary effects occurring.
Contact Punishers
These abilities require you to be hit by a move, but when that happens it hurts the opponent back!
Flame Body: May burn the opponent when hit by a contact move.
Static: May paralyze the opponent when hit by a contact move.
Cursed Body: May disable a move that hits the Pokémon.
Perish Body: Causes the opponent to faint after a few turns if it makes contact.
Effect Spore: May inflict a status condition when hit by a contact move.
Poison Touch: May poison the opponent when hit by a contact move.
Item Synergy
Using these work best when you have specific held items, berries in this case!
Harvest: May create a Berry after one is used.
Cud Chew: Restores HP when consuming a Berry.
General Utility
These are useful in a variety of situations and can be a nice lil versatile boost
Infiltrator: Passes through the opponent's barriers and substitutes.
Scrappy: Allows the Pokémon to hit Ghost-type Pokémon with Normal- and Fighting-type moves.
Natural Cure: Heals status conditions upon switching out.
C Tier
These abilities are... situational, really. They're not bad, but in my opinion they just require a bit more setup for specific matchups to provide any real value. They don't have the same utility as other abilities but they aren't as useful as others.
Effect Prevention
Protecting against specific effects can be useful but the situtations that these happen in are really just few and far between. Another set of ones that are just useful enough to not be a drag on your team, but also not really worth stressing over
Battle Armor: Prevents critical hits.
Shell Armor: Prevents critical hits.
Suction Cups: Prevents the Pokémon from being forced out of battle.
Shield Dust: Prevents secondary effects of moves.
Own Tempo: Prevents confusion.
Insomnia: Prevents sleep.
Vital Spirit: Prevents sleep.
Immunity: Prevents poisoning.
Water Veil: Prevents burning.
Magma Armor: Prevents freezing.
Keen Eye: Prevents accuracy from being lowered.
Sticky Hold: Prevents the Pokémon's held item from being taken.
Hyper Cutter: Prevents Attack from being lowered.
Big Pecks: Prevents the Pokémon's Defense from being lowered.
Conditional Stat Boosts
These abilities will only trigger under more rare conditions or ones that require more set up, like weather based moves. The boost that they get is nice but the set up for that pay off isn't great.
Snow Cloak: Boosts evasion in hail.
Sand Veil: Boosts evasion in a sandstorm.
Rattled: Boosts Speed, Attack, and Special Attack when hit by a Bug-, Ghost-, or Dark-type move.
Berserk: Boosts Special Attack when HP drops below 50%.
Anger Point: Maximizes Attack after taking a critical hit.
Status Condition Interactions
These abilities will change how status conditions affect Pokemon, if you have a Pokemon with one of these abilities it will be a change of pace for any status based teams!
Synchronize: Passes a status condition to the opponent when the Pokémon is inflicted with one.
Shed Skin: May heal a status condition each turn.
Early Bird: Awakens quickly from sleep.
Soundproof: Grants immunity to sound-based moves.
Pastel Veil: Protects itself and its allies from being poisoned.
Wonder Skin: Changes status moves to have a 50% chance of being ineffective.
Information and Niche Effects
Not a lot to say, these are mostly useful for finding information about your opponent or changing the way Pokemon types are affected by other types.
Liquid Ooze: Damages the opponent when it drains HP from the Pokémon.
Anticipation: Alerts the Pokémon if the opponent has a super effective move or a one-hit KO move.
Forewarn: Alerts the Pokémon to the opponent's strongest move.
Frisk: Reveals the opponent's held item when entering battle.
Corrosion: Allows the Pokémon to poison Steel-type and Poison-type Pokémon.
Gluttony: Makes the Pokémon eat Berries earlier than usual.
D Tier
I don't really like these ones. They don't do very much at least in battle or just seem like a waste. If your Pokemon has one of these its okay, but just know that your power will have to come from your stats rather than an ability as an advantage!
Only a Lil Impact
Stench: May cause the opponent to flinch.
Damp: Prevents self-destruction moves and may prevent the opponent from using them.
Oblivious: Prevents infatuation and being taunted.
Cloud Nine: Negates weather effects.
Illuminate: Raises the likelihood of encountering wild Pokémon.
Run Away: Ensures escape from wild Pokémon.
Honey Gather: May gather Honey after battle.
Rivalry: Boosts Attack if the opponent is of the same gender.
Light Metal: Halves the Pokémon's weight.
Screen Cleaner: Removes the effects of Light Screen and Reflect when entering battle.
Pickup: May pick up items after battle.
Final Thoughts
Againnnn, this tier list is just my own take. I've only played the game a handful of times so I'm sure someone else has different opinions. Anyways, they're a small part of the game (but still new to Polished Crystal) so theres always ways to work with each one!
