Introduction
Polished Crystal includes several special guest trainers outside the regular Gym Leader and PokéGear rematch systems. Some are one-off battles that respawn after another Elite Four clear. Others move into the Fighting Dojo rematch rotation after you beat a stronger version of them.
This page focuses on the special trainers players most often ask about: Cynthia, Steven, Marlon, Piers, and Lorelei.
How Special Trainers Work
- Find the trainer - They're tied to a specific location or story event, not a route boss chain
- Beat their first battle - Each has an initial encounter tied to story progress
- Watch for the follow-up - Some rematch on a set day at the Fighting Dojo, others reset after another Elite Four clear
- Battle again - Rematches often use stronger teams than the first encounter

Lorelei
Lorelei is first found in Ice Path B3F. She has an initial battle and a stronger follow-up battle there.
After you beat the stronger Ice Path battle, she joins the Fighting Dojo rotation in Saffron City. She appears on Tuesday night.
Important note: if you are looking for the repeatable Lorelei rematch, check the Fighting Dojo after clearing her second Ice Path fight. Do not keep searching Ice Path for the Dojo rematch.
Steven
Steven is found in Embedded Tower on Route 47. After you beat him and receive his Muscle Band, he can come back after another Elite Four clear.
The Elite Four respawn routine resets Steven's battle if you have already received the Muscle Band, putting him back in Embedded Tower for another challenge.
Cynthia
Cynthia is tied to the Sinjoh Ruins sequence. She appears around Mystri Stage first, then can be battled in Sinjoh Ruins House.
After you beat her and receive her Wise Glasses, another Elite Four clear can reset her battle and place her back for a rematch in Sinjoh Ruins House.
Marlon
Marlon is found on Route 41. His team changes based on your story progress:
- Before beating the Elite Four: first team
- After beating the Elite Four: stronger team
- After beating the Elite Four again: strongest team
His rematch-completed flag is reset by the Elite Four respawn routine, so clearing the Elite Four again makes another Marlon fight available.
Piers
Piers is found at the Warehouse Entrance in Goldenrod's underground area. His first battle is available before Champion status. After you beat the Elite Four, he offers a stronger rematch.
Like Marlon, Piers' rematch-completed flag is reset by the Elite Four respawn routine, so another Elite Four clear makes his rematch available again.
Tips for Special Trainer Battles
- Check story progress - Most of these trainers change teams based on Elite Four clears, not badges
- Don't miss the Dojo window - Lorelei only appears in the Fighting Dojo on Tuesday night
- Come prepared - Rematches after the Elite Four use noticeably stronger teams than the first encounter
- Track the reset - Beating the Elite Four again can bring Marlon, Piers, Steven, and Cynthia back for another battle
