Modern Emerald FAQ: Options, Saves, Emulators and the Questions Everyone Asks
Modern Emerald answers are usually one of two things: a setting you picked at new game and forgot about, or a core mechanic the hack quietly changed. Both are covered below, using the hack's own documentation and the extracted game data.
What version does PolishedDex document?
The upstream project's latest release tag is Release3.5. The game data on PolishedDex is extracted from the upstream repository at commit 12b61b7 (43 commits past that tag, dated 19 August 2026), because work continued after the release.
Upstream is the authority for the patch file, changelogs and support. Releases live on the project repository, and the hack's own thread is on PokeCommunity. PolishedDex is a reference site and does not host game files or patches.
Which emulator should I use?
mGBA, or real hardware. The author's own note is blunt about this: decompilation hacks can crash or throw strange bugs on emulators other than recent ones, and that is not something the hack can fix. If you are seeing behaviour that looks broken, test on mGBA before reporting it.
Can I open my save in PKHeX or PKSM?
No. Modern Emerald changed parts of the save data, and those tools rely on knowing exactly where everything sits, so they cannot read the file. The author's recommendation is to use the game's debug menu instead, which covers most of what those tools would do. The debug menu is powerful enough to break your save if you use it carelessly, so keep a backup before experimenting. Instructions live in the hack's own FAQ rather than here.
Are saves compatible between Modern Emerald versions?
There is no documented compatibility statement from the project, so plan for the possibility that an update invalidates a run. Back up your save (and your save state) before replacing your patch, and check the release notes for the version you are moving to.
Are the modern features baked in, or optional?
Almost everything is optional and chosen at new game. The gamemode page offers a Classic preset, a Modern preset, or individual toggles covering encounter tables, the physical/special split, Fairy type, modern typings, stat buffs, extra legendaries, the type chart, nature mints, reusable TMs and more. Settings: Every New Game Option walks through the lot, and Modern Emerald vs Vanilla shows what each one actually changes.
The short version: Classic plus Original encounters is close to vanilla Emerald; Modern turns on the Gen 4-and-later package.
I can't find my settings
Open the PC in any Pokémon Center and choose CHALLENGES. That screen shows what is currently enabled on your save, and in most cases lets you change it. The important exception: gamemode selections are permanent until you start a new game. Read that screen before you commit to a run you care about.
Can I change the difficulty after starting?
Usually yes. Easy, Normal and Hard can be changed from the options menu, unless you enabled Limit difficulty, which locks whatever you chose during Birch's speech. Hard mode also forces Set battle style while the lock is on.
How do HMs work?
You do not have to teach an HM to use it. If you have the HM in the bag, the matching badge, and a Pokémon that can use the move, the field action works. HM moves can also be deleted, which is why nobody has to carry a Cut mule any more. In Nuzlocke runs the hack goes further: Pokémon that would not normally learn a required HM are given it so a run cannot stall on a field move.
Is Modern Emerald a difficulty hack?
No, and the author is careful to say so. Easy scales trainers and wild Pokémon down and gives more EXP; Normal is vanilla with rematches; Hard is a modest step up rather than a Kaizo experience, though Hard plus the IV/EV scaling options is where serious runs live. See Level Caps and Difficulty and Hard Mode: Every Change for the specifics.
Which encounters am I playing?
One of three modes, chosen at new game: Original (vanilla Emerald tables, with no R/S exclusives), New (the hack's own tables across the whole game and postgame), or Postgame (vanilla until you beat the league, new tables after). Encounters: Original vs New vs Postgame explains the difference, and Encounters by Route lists every route where the tables differ.
When does Wonder Trade unlock?
After the fifth badge, on the basement floor of every Pokémon Center. It is three trades a day unless you enabled unlimited trades. Randomizer runs start with it unlocked, and challenge runs unlock it after beating the game. Rarity is tiered, so a Wonder Trade is not a shortcut to a legendary. Full detail on the Wonder Trade page.
Are all the legendaries obtainable?
Yes, including Mew, Deoxys, Jirachi, Mewtwo, Ho-Oh and Lugia, though several sit behind Battle Frontier tickets and a couple need specific party members. Locations and unlock conditions are on Legendary Pokémon. On Hard mode expect lower catch rates and a Battle Frontier ban on bringing legendaries in.
What is different about the day/night clock?
Daytime runs 06:00 to 20:00 and night runs 20:00 to 06:00, and morning (06:00 to 09:00) exists specifically for the two new evolution methods. If your emulator has no real time clock, enable the game's RTC option so daily events and nighttime evolutions still work.
Where do I get exact data instead of a forum answer?
- Pokédex: species, stats, abilities, evolutions and learnsets.
- Moves: move details and the new and buffed moves.
- Items: item details and published acquisition data.
- Locations: areas, encounters and item locations.
- Trainer Battles: gym leaders, Elite Four and special trainers.
- Tools: encounter finder, type chart, damage calculator and team building.
Where the extracted data does not prove something, this page says so rather than guessing. Modern Emerald changes a lot of hidden plumbing, and a confident wrong answer about it costs you a run.
