You choose the encounter mode once, at the start of the game, and it decides which wild Pokémon exist in every route. It is one of the biggest decisions in the run — bigger than difficulty, in practice, because it decides what you can catch and when.

The three modes

Original — vanilla Emerald's encounter tables, unchanged. Routes hold the Pokémon you remember from 2005, and the 423-Pokémon roster only appears through gifts, trades and the postgame.

New (Modern) — the hack's own tables, in use from the first route. The expanded roster is spread across Hoenn from the beginning, including the Gen 4 additions and the few Gen 8 and Gen 9 species.

Postgame — vanilla tables until you beat the game, then the Modern tables. This is the compromise: a familiar early game, the full roster afterwards.

What actually changes between them

  • Early routes: Original keeps Route 101–104 to Wurmple, Poochyena, Zigzagoon and co. New mixes in the expanded roster immediately.
  • Fishing and water routes differ the most, because that is where the extra species were slotted in.
  • Fossils follow the mode too: the Helix Fossil, Dome Fossil and Old Amber in Altering Cave require New encounters.

Which one should you pick

  • Playing it instead of Emerald, like the hack intends — New. The roster is the point.
  • Nuzlocke with a familiar map — Postgame. You get the classic early game and the new toys later.
  • Catching everything — New. You can still hit the full dex, and you'll do less backtracking.

Whatever you pick does not change evolution methods, level caps or trainers. Those are separate options, and the trainer rematches scale regardless.
