Violet City contains the first Gym. The Gym Leader is Falkner, who specializes in Flying-Type Pokemon. Within the city you will also find Sprout Tower and the Pokemon Academy. Talking to the headmaster of the academy grants you a Type Chart.
In the Southern section of the city lives a boy who will trade you a Voltorb should you provide him with a Poliwag. South of Violet City is Route 32, which contains Mareep. While it can be tempting to reach for Electric and Rock-type Pokemon when facing Falkner, his speedy Mud-Slaps may catch you off-guard should you try. An Air Balloon could be a great counter here!
