Rival Battles

Your rival's team depends on which of Soulgold's nine starters you chose, and the game registers a separate encounter line for each choice rather than one shared team. The first meeting happens in Cherrygrove City at level 5, and later encounters scale with your progression instead of a fixed curve, which means the same encounter index can look very different between two runs.

Each line records where the fight happens as well as the team, so you can check the next meeting before you walk into it rather than after.

If the rival's name renders as unknown on this page, that is accurate to the data rather than a display fault: the rival record carries a blank name field while every team, level and location under it is present. We would rather show the gap than fill it in.
