Modern Emerald makes shiny hunting much faster than Emerald did, and the biggest lever is a setting, not a mechanic: you choose the shiny odds when you start the game.

The five odds settings

SettingProbability
8192
Emerald default — 1 in 8,192
4096
Gen VI+ — 1 in 4,096
2048
1 in 2,048
1024
1 in 1,024
512
1 in 512

On the Modern preset you are likely on 4096. 512 is roughly sixteen times faster than the default, and it is the setting to pick if shiny hunting is the reason you are playing.

The Masuda method

Breeding two Pokémon from different language games still works and multiplies your odds, on top of whatever setting you chose. Combine 512 with Masuda and shiny eggs come quickly — especially since breeding inherited five IVs with no item and eggs arrive faster here than in vanilla.

24 new shiny palettes

"Shiny Colors" is a separate option that gives 24 Pokémon brand-new shiny palettes rather than the vanilla recolours. In 3.3 and later it is a toggle; in 3.2 and earlier it was always on.

The Pokédex tracks them

The new Pokédex records the shiny Pokémon you catch, so you can check what you have without keeping a list. Birch's bag shows shiny starters, so you can reset for a shiny starter at the very start.

Notes

  • Day/night drives several evolutions, so if you are hunting something like Froslass or Honchkrow, check the RTC option — with a fake clock it is always 1 hour to 1 in-game day.
  • Shiny hunting and EV training are compatible: the IV Maximizer in Lilycove sets IVs to 30 or 31 after the credits, so a shiny caught at level 5 can still be made competitive.
