Field moves work from the menu in Modern Emerald. If you are holding the HM and you have the badge, you can use Cut, Fly, Surf, Strength, Flash, Rock Smash, Waterfall and Dive without teaching them to a party member — so HMs never cost you a slot. The HM itself still has to be collected.

Order that matters

  1. HM01 Cut — Rustboro City once you have the Stone Badge. You need it for the Petalburg Woods and Route 104 shortcut.
  2. HM06 Rock Smash — a house in Mauville City, around the third gym. Opens the desert and several item spots.
  3. HM05 Flash — Granite Cave, before Brawly's gym if you want the earlier path through.
  4. HM03 Surf — Wally's house in Petalburg City, after Norman's gym. This is the real mid-game gate: it opens Routes 105–109, the sea routes and Mossdeep.
  5. HM04 Strength — Rusturf Tunnel, after you clear the rocks. Needed for Victory Road and several item puzzles.
  6. HM02 Fly — Route 119, near Fortree. Quality of life above all else.
  7. HM07 Waterfall — Sootopolis City, after the Sky Pillar and the gym sequence; the final gate to Victory Road's upper half and the League.
  8. HM08 Dive — Steven's house in Mossdeep City, once you have the Mind Badge. Required for the Seafloor Cavern and the sunken ship.

Key items to watch for

  • The outfit box — from your mother, early. Purely cosmetic but the hack's own addition.
  • EXP. SHARE — Devon Corp story reward; EXP. SHARE S is then sold at the Slateport Mart. Both exist in the same game, and the training page explains which to use.
  • The bikes — Mach and Acro, from the Rydel's Cycles in Mauville, as in vanilla.
  • Go-Goggles — needed for the desert, as in vanilla.
  • Battle Frontier tickets — the Old Sea Map, Mystic Ticket, Aurora Ticket and Eon Ticket are bought with Battle Points at the Frontier's reward shop and unlock Mew, Ho-Oh/Lugia, Deoxys and Latias/Latios.

Key item locations are largely vanilla Emerald and are not repeated here; HM data read from the extracted game data (tmhm_locations.json).
