Modern Emerald EXP Share and Training Guide: Every Way to Level and EV Train
Modern Emerald has two EXP Shares, and which one you are using changes how experience is split:
- EXP. SHARE — the Gen III item, obtained from Devon Corp as part of the story. It gives the full experience to the Pokémon that battled, then a share of it to the holder.
- EXP. SHARE S — the Gen VI version, sold at the Slateport Mart after you have the EXP. SHARE from Devon Corp. It splits experience across the whole party, which is why it is the one people look for.
In Hard mode the EXP. SHARE S gives only a quarter of the experience to the rest of the team, and EXP gain overall is cut by 40%. There is a "Hard mode Experience" option in the difficulty menu that undoes the cut, but the hack's own documentation says it makes Hard mode considerably easier and that the 40% figure was hand-tested.
The difficulty menu also has an EXP multiplier — ×1, ×1.5, ×2 or ×0. The ×0 option exists if you want a challenge run with no levelling at all.
Where to train
Lilycove City is the training hub, and most of it unlocks after you become Champion. Everything below is in Lilycove unless stated:
- A Lv100 Blissey EXP trainer — six Blissey at level 100, fought in the gym after the game. This is the single fastest way to level anything to 100.
- A nurse NPC who will farm experience for you, available after beating the game.
- EV training — an EV trainer is available in Lilycove, which is where you want to do your spreads.
- The IV Maximizer, available after beating the game. It needs a level 100 Pokémon and can set IVs to 30 or 31 — the 30 option exists so you can keep a different Hidden Power.
- An ability tutor, available in Lilycove after you become Champion.
Two more that matter for training:
- Rock Smash now gives Shards and Heart Scales, so smashing rocks is a genuine resource loop rather than a chore.
- Macho Brace multiplies EV gain by 5 — a huge boost over the vanilla doubling, and the reason EV training in this hack is quick.
Level caps run alongside all of this
The optional level cap setting stops you from over-levelling before a gym: 15, 19, 24, 29, 31, 33, 42, 46 and 58 for the eight badges on Normal caps, with a stricter Hard cap table and higher tables in Hard mode. See the level caps guide for all four tables.
Rematches are a reliable source of experience
Every trainer in the game can be rematched, and rematches scale well past the credits — up to roughly level 60–70. The Big Nugget, which sells for a very high price, comes from rich trainers on rematch only. There is also a Chansey EXP trainer in the Lilycove gym for postgame grinding.
Experience mechanics and training NPCs from the hack's official documentation; item sources from the extracted game data.
