Ghost Grey Lore and Setting: The World the ROM Tells You About

What the Ghost Grey ROM states about its own world: 83 areas, 79 trainer classes, and the item text that carries its tone -- and where the story stops being ours to publish.
Last updated: October 18, 2026

Ghost Grey is Kanto after something happened to it, and the game wants you to find out what by playing it. So this page does the opposite of a wiki: it gathers what the ROM and the game's own text will tell you -- the places, the people, the objects, the tone -- and it stops at every door the game wants to open itself.

If you are looking for the ending, the sacrifice, the passwords or the secret room, they are not here and they are not going to be. Play for yourself. The spoiler guide names what is being withheld without printing it, which is as specific as this site is willing to get.

The Kanto you are standing in

The area list reads like the old region with a second civilisation built on top of it. Alongside Pallet Town, Viridian City, Cerulean City, Rock Tunnel and Routes 1 to 27 sit places the original game never had:

  • Amethyst Lane, Jaspar Town, Opal Village, Celidon City (with its own department store), Smeraldopoli -- new settlements with gemstone names.
  • House Of Puppets, Memorie Valley, Lake Lucidus, Deeproot Grotto, Heater Forest, Pumkin Patch, Fort Sanguine -- landmarks that sound less like geography and more like things people did.
  • Bruno Enterprises, Computer Lab, Offshore Facility, Rocket Warehouse, Formerly 28, myfiles/map1-110.exe -- the industrial and administrative layer, including one name that is plainly a stray filename the hack never cleaned up.

Eighty-three areas publish: about two thirds are Kanto's own geography -- including twenty-four of the numbered Routes it keeps -- and the rest are the hack's additions. The additions are where its voice lives.

Who you meet

The published trainer table names 79 classes, and the roster is the best one-paragraph description of this Kanto anyone can give you. By count:

  • Bug Cultist (38) -- the region's largest organised group is a cult, and it is about bugs.
  • Officer (29), Scavenger (22), Castaway (9) -- law, salvage and the people who washed up.
  • Moon Child (20), with a Paradise Moonbase on the map -- a moon cult with infrastructure.
  • Beastmaster (19), Scientist (18), Cave Person (16), Sailor (16), Ghost Pirate (14) -- and a Davy Jones' Locker to sail to.
  • Virus (14), Swamp Shade (12), Channeler (10), Hex Maniac (8), Hell Priest (8), Plaything (5), Burnout (5) -- the horror register, worn openly.

Then there are the classes that are really titles: Leader (9), Elite Four (6), Champion (6), and a Best Friend who keeps turning up.

What is left lying around

The item descriptions are where this hack is most itself. Verbatim, from the ROM:

  • Bone Brush -- "A dry paintbrush made of strands of human hair. The handle is made of chipped bone."
  • GrySoulstone -- "A grey stone imbued with the souls of thousands before you. It beckons…"
  • Blood Bag -- "An IV Bag filled with someone's blood. It can be sold cheaply."
  • Gold Tooth -- "Someone's fake tooth. It can be sold at a high price."
  • Dream Bar -- "A creamy, sweet bar of white chocolate. Tastes like a Dream! Fully restores the PP of one move."
  • Mooncake -- "A delicious, sweet and flaky pastry willed with red bean paste. Will fully revive a fainted ghost."
  • Chocosongi and a Macaron "from Kalos" -- the world outside still exists, and treats travel.

Read the Mooncake line twice: the game's own text calls the Pokémon on your team ghosts. That is not the wiki's framing. That is the ROM's.

The seams show, and that is part of the tone

This is a hack that grew for years, and it does not hide it:

  • One published area is named myfiles/map1-110.exe.
  • A sign in the opening hours still holds placeholder text, and the extractor refuses to treat it as a giveaway.
  • You can buy a joke Boulder Badge, and the game's own listing text says seven Gym Badges while the ROM grants eight flags.
  • Formerly 28 is a place name, not a footnote.

None of that is a bug list. It is the register the game plays in: half-finished, unofficial, and honest about it.

Where this page stops

The endings, the three-way branch behind the final badge, the identity of the sacrifice, the passwords and the secret area are all recorded in this site's data and all deliberately unpublished. The hack's author would rather you met them in-game, and a walkthrough is not a substitute for playing it -- so the spoiler guide names what exists and stops short of what it says, and the 100% checklist keeps its story section behind a disclosure you have to choose to open.

How this page knows what it knows

Four sources, and nothing else. The ROM's area list (83 names). The trainer table (classes and counts). Item descriptions, quoted verbatim. And the game's own text where the extractor can read it. If a claim about the story is not in one of those, this page does not make it -- which is why there is a lot of Ghost Grey's plot that this site will happily say it cannot source.

For the world, that is enough. For the story, go and play it.
