Ghost Grey Gym Leaders: Badge Order, Teams, Levels, and Locations
Short answer: Ghost Grey hands out eight badges, and only five of them come from a gym fight -- in Cerulean City (badge 2), Vermilion City (badge 3), Celidon City (badge 4), Fuchsia City (badge 5) and Davy Jones' Locker (badge 7). Badges 1, 6 and 8 are granted by story scripts with no gym and no leader at all: Seafoam Islands, Desert Palace, and Fuji Catacombs. Maj.Voltage holds two gyms, so those five badges come from four leaders.
How this was read: every badge below comes out of the ROM's own badge flags (
0x820-0x827, its first eight system flags) and is attributed to the map object or map script that sets them, so the order is the game's, not an assumption from another hack or from Polished Crystal. Where the ROM does not say something - rematch conditions, level caps - this guide says so rather than inventing it.
Badge order at a glance
| Badge | Where it is granted | Who fights for it | Leader page |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | Seafoam Islands | nobody - a story script (item 288) | - |
2 | Cerulean City | Maj.Voltage | |
3 | Vermilion City | Maj.Voltage | |
4 | Celidon City | Erika | |
5 | Fuchsia City | Onibaba | |
6 | Desert Palace | nobody - three script commands and a flag | - |
7 | Davy Jones' Locker | Cap'n Steve | |
8 | Fuji Catacombs | nobody published - see below | - |
Badges 2 and 3 share a leader, which is why a five-gym challenge has four names in it.
The four leaders
Cerulean City - Maj.Voltage (badges 2 and 3)
The same trainer row grants both badges: the object script in Cerulean City sets the flag for badge 2, and its Vermilion City counterpart sets badge 3. It fields the team below in both gyms.
One name, three rows. majvoltage (TRAINER_415, Lv 18-21) is the badge gym. The ROM also holds maxvoltage3 (TRAINER_62, Lv 37-45, no location attached) and maxvoltage (TRAINER_4, Lv 69-77, Route 25) - extra Maj.Voltage battles that are not badge gyms, so do not read their levels as the gym's.
Celidon City - Erika (badge 4)
Fuchsia City - Onibaba (badge 5)
The ROM files Onibaba under the class Demon Woman rather than Leader, which is why this guide's data cites the badge flag itself as the proof that this is a gym. The badge does not lie: her script is the only thing in the ROM that sets badge 5.
Davy Jones' Locker - Cap'n Steve (badge 7)
Badge 7 is granted twice in the ROM - once here, and once on Cinnabar Island by a shared award script that other objects also reach. Only the Davy Jones' Locker site fights a single row, so it is the gym; the Cinnabar copy is script reuse.
The three badges with no gym
- Badge 1 - Seafoam Islands. A story script: it hands over an item, plays a fanfare, shows one mon portrait, and sets the flag. No battle.
- Badge 6 - Desert Palace. Three commands long: remove an object, set a story flag, set the badge. No battle.
- Badge 8 - Fuji Catacombs. Three battles do set this flag, but all three rows are named
Summer, part of a 27-row family of that name the trainer table reuses. The page set withholds them rather than publishing twenty-oddsummerslugs, so the fight is real and unpublished.
Past badge 8: the Elite Four at Indigo Plateau
Badge 8 is not the end of the game. Indigo Plateau holds five more fights, every one of them classed Elite Four in the ROM, at levels 59-70 - so bring a team built for the low 70s. The map lists them in this order, and each fights exactly one team:
| Fight | ROM row | Team | Levels | Ace |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Whitney | TRAINER_410 | 6 mons | 59-65 | Miltank |
Lance | TRAINER_411 | 6 mons | 66-70 | Dragonite |
Moa | TRAINER_412 | 6 mons | 62-68 | Octillery |
Pryce | TRAINER_413 | 6 mons | 62-67 | Piloswine |
Agatha | TRAINER_737 | 5 mons | 65-70 | Gengar |
None of these five grants a badge, which is why they are not in the badge table above. Their teams are on the Indigo Plateau location page.
After the Elite Four: the champions at Heart of the World
Indigo Plateau is not the last fight either. The ROM holds two more trainer rows, both classed This is it..., both at Lv 95-99, both located only at Heart of the World:
| Champion | ROM row | Levels |
|---|---|---|
JONNY BONES | TRAINER_36 | 95-99 |
JUNEBUG | TRAINER_39 | 95-99 |
Their lead depends on which starter you picked, and the rest of each team is fixed. Teams, moves and held items are in the Champion Battles guide - this guide stops at the badge order plus the league that follows it.
What this guide does not claim
- Level caps: Ghost Grey ships no level-cap artifact, so no caps are shown.
- Rematches: the ROM's rematch table reads empty for this hack, so rematch teams are not listed.
Useful planning links
- Locations - the areas each badge comes from, with encounters.
- Trainers - every published trainer row, including the league.
