Evolution Guide: No Trade Evolutions
Every trade evolution in Pokémon Emerald has been rewritten in Emerald Legacy. If you're stuck holding a Machoke and wondering whether you need a second console, you don't -- get it to level 38.
The ROM's extracted evolution data covers 313 species, and not one of them evolves by trading. Every former trade evolution is now a level-up, a held item, or a friendship check.
The four that just want levels now
The classic "trade to evolve" families are the ones people ask about most, and all four now evolve by level alone:
| Your Pokémon | Evolves into | New requirement |
|---|---|---|
Machoke | Machamp | Level 38 |
Graveler | Golem | Level 38 |
Kadabra | Alakazam | Level 42 |
Haunter | Gengar | Level 42 |
The early steps are unchanged, so you'll still pick up Machop → Machoke at level 28, Geodude → Graveler at 25, Abra → Kadabra at 16 and Gastly → Haunter at 25. The last step of each line is the only one that moved.
Level 42 is late -- later than most players reach on a normal playthrough. If you were counting on a Gengar for the Elite Four, plan for the training time or grab it from a route where Haunter already appears.
The held-item evolutions kept the item
Every trade-with-item evolution in vanilla Emerald now just wants the item. No link cable, no trading partner:
| Your Pokémon | Held item | Evolves into |
|---|---|---|
Onix | Steelix | |
Scyther | Scizor | |
Porygon | Porygon2 | |
Seadra | Kingdra | |
Slowpoke | Slowking | |
Poliwhirl | Politoed | |
Clamperl | Huntail | |
Clamperl | Gorebyss |
This is the single biggest quality-of-life change in the ROM for anyone playing solo. Onix, Scyther and Porygon were effectively dead ends in vanilla Emerald unless you had a friend with a link cable.
Two species that now have a real choice
Because the trade requirement is gone, two lines became genuinely branchable:
- Slowpoke -- Slowbro at level 37, or King's Rock for Slowking. Slowbro is the bulkier one; Slowking trades physical durability for Special Defense.
- Poliwhirl -- Water Stone for Poliwrath, or King's Rock for Politoed.
Both are decided by you rather than by who happens to own a second Game Boy.
The cases that catch people out
Wurmple's split
Wurmple evolves at level 7 into Silcoon or Cascoon based on a hidden personality value the game rolls when you catch it. You can't influence it, and you won't know which until it evolves -- same as vanilla. Silcoon becomes Beautifly at 10, Cascoon becomes Dustox at 10.
Tyrogue's stat branches
Tyrogue evolves at level 20 into a different Hitmon depending on its stats at that moment:
- Hitmonchan if Attack < Defense
- Hitmonlee if Attack > Defense
- Hitmontop if Attack = Defense
The fourth path is a shortcut: Brick Piece gets you Hitmontop regardless of how the stats landed. That's the one to use if the stat RNG isn't cooperating.
Nincada
Nincada evolves at level 20 -- and the data lists two outcomes at the same level, Ninjask and Shedinja. Leave a free party slot open if you want Shedinja, because it appears alongside Ninjask rather than instead of it.
Feebas
Feebas evolves into Milotic when its Beauty reaches 170. Beauty comes from Pokéblocks, which means berry blending -- the slow, fussy way, exactly as in vanilla. There's a reward for the effort: Feebas is one of the harder finds in the game, so a Milotic is a genuine trophy here.
Eevee
Eevee has five destinations in this ROM, and the split is well signposted:
- Thunder Stone → Jolteon
- Water Stone → Vaporeon
- Fire Stone → Flareon
- Friendship during the day → Espeon
- Friendship at night → Umbreon
Eevee is the only species in the ROM's data with day/night-gated friendship evolutions, so if you're trying to remember which evolutions care about the clock, it's this one.
Friendship evolutions at a glance
Seven species evolve purely on friendship, with no time restriction:
Azurill → Marill, Cleffa → Clefairy, Igglybuff → Jigglypuff, Pichu → Pikachu, Chansey → Blissey, Togepi → Togetic, Golbat → Crobat.
Friendship builds from walking, battling and vitamins. The Soothe Bell exists in this ROM and is the standard way to speed that up if you're in a hurry.
What this page can't tell you
The evolution data records the trigger for each evolution, not the paperwork around it. Three gaps worth knowing about:
- Where the evolution items are. Metal Coat, King's Rock and friends all live somewhere specific in Hoenn -- the items index is the place to look them up.
- How to raise Beauty efficiently. The data proves the requirement is 170; it says nothing about the best berry blend.
- Wurmple's personality formula. The data names the two branches but not the maths behind them.
If you want to see the full chain for any specific Pokémon, its Pokédex page shows what it evolves into, and the evolutions index covers every family in the ROM.
Where these numbers come from: Emerald Legacy's extracted evolution data for the default variant -- 313 species with chain data, and zero trade methods anywhere in it.
