Scope

This is a source-backed reference for the opening of Pokémon Emerald Legacy: the starter selection, the Route 103 rival battle, and the first four Gym Leaders. It lists only facts confirmed by the current ROM source and generated trainer data; it is not a step-by-step route walkthrough.

The opening rival battle is on Route 103. The rival uses the starter that has the advantage in the starter cycle:

For early catches, the generated encounter data lists Wurmple, Poochyena, Zigzagoon, Rattata, and Spearow on Route 101; Ralts, Lotad, Seedot, and Pidgey are also listed on Route 102. Petalburg Woods includes Shroomish, Slakoth, Taillow, Caterpie, Weedle, Silcoon, and Cascoon among its grass encounters.

Roxanne — Rustboro City Gym

Stone Badge · Highest level: 15

Nosepass holds an Oran Berry and knows Rock Tomb. Water-, Grass-, and Fighting-type attacks are strong options against the Rock-focused team. Defeating Roxanne awards TM Rock Tomb.

Brawly — Dewford Town Gym

Knuckle Badge · Highest level: 19

Makuhita carries a Sitrus Berry and knows Bulk Up, Vital Throw, Reversal, and Faint Attack. Breloom knows Mega Drain, Bulk Up, and Stun Spore. Flying- and Psychic-type attacks are useful against the Fighting matchups, but account for Meditite's Light Screen and Reflect. Defeating Brawly awards TM Bulk Up.

Wattson — Mauville City Gym

Dynamo Badge · Highest level: 25

Ground coverage is effective against most of this team, but Chinchou is Water/Electric, so it is not a Ground target. Chinchou knows BubbleBeam and Icy Wind; Manectric holds a Lum Berry and knows Shock Wave. Defeating Wattson awards TM Shock Wave.

Flannery — Lavaridge Town Gym

Heat Badge · Highest level: 32

Flannery's team uses Sunny Day, including on Vulpix, Magcargo, Camerupt, and Torkoal. Torkoal holds a White Herb and knows Overheat. Water-, Ground-, and Rock-type attacks are useful matchups; Sunny Day strengthens Fire moves and weakens Water attacks. Defeating Flannery awards TM Overheat.
