Differences From Vanilla

A list of differences between Pokémon Sour Crystal and Vanilla Crystal.
Author: Compiled from the Sour Crystal PokeCommunity thread, GitHub repo, and release notes
Last updated: August 20, 2026

Sour Crystal is what its author calls an "improvement hack" — the stated goal is "to improve upon most of the original game's known flaws while retaining the overall Gen2 feeling as best as it can." It's built on the Pokémon Crystal disassembly, and, in the author's phrasing, the point is "not to change, but build upon" the original with bug fixes, graphical tweaks, and quality of life.

That framing matters for the "does it include X?" questions: it stays firmly Gen 2. If you're hoping for a modernized Crystal, this is not that — it's a polished Gen 2. That's the honest way to read the feature list below.

Pokémon and sprites

  • All 251 Pokémon are obtainable.
  • 200+ new or redone custom Pokémon sprites by the author, front and back, including shiny palettes.
  • Unique party sprites.
  • Some postgame Pokémon are now available in Johto earlier — Houndour and Slugma are named.
  • Type changes: the Ghost type is now Special; Dark and Dragon are now Physical.

Moves and battles

  • Updated move properties (base power, accuracy, effects) and updated movepools.
  • Updated attack animations for some moves, plus an upgraded battle color system for more dynamic effects.
  • A new Swarm system with more than 95 swarms; swarming Pokémon have an increased shiny chance.
  • Trade evolutions can be obtained via a new Linking Cord item, or by using the trade item (King's Rock, Metal Coat, etc.) on the Pokémon.
  • A Move Reminder was added.
  • Almost all Gen 2 bugs are fixed.

World and exploration

  • A fully working Safari Zone with 4 custom biomes.
  • Kanto restored to its Gen 1 size, including some cut areas — and Kanto now has Headbutt trees.
  • All HeartGold/SoulSilver-exclusive routes and trainers are ported in.
  • Visible Berries and Apricorns on the overworld; each tree respawns at midnight.
  • A Berry Pocket so your main bag doesn't fill with berries.
  • Overworld weather.
  • Instant Apricorn Balls.

Quality of life and systems

  • A Challenge Mode System chosen at New Game.
  • An upgraded trainer rematch system ("to make grinding more enjoyable and rewarding," per the thread).
  • A complete PC Box overhaul — it now works like Gen 3, no more saving between boxes.
  • The new Pager system removes the need for HM slaves. HMs can still be used the original way; the Pager is a backup if you need it.
  • Reusable TMs.
  • Reusable TMs aside, learning moves stays Gen 2-ish — no Physical/Special split, no following Pokémon, no Running Shoes, no Gen 3+ Pokémon, no fakemon or beta Pokémon. These are explicitly out of scope.

Version history

  • SC-v6.2 (Apr 19, 2026) is the latest: save-tagging for future updates, an Itemfinder reworked to FRLG-style arrows, the Pokegear shows day and time for rematch trainers, and a batch of sprite/animation updates and bugfixes.
  • Earlier notable versions: v6.1 (Mar 2026) restored the Fuchsia City Safari Zone and pulled the Gen5 exp scaling; v6.0 (Dec 2025) introduced double-speed battles and Gen5 exp scaling (later removed); the v5.x line goes back to early 2025.

Status: complete and actively maintained. The thread's own "Known Issues" section reads "None Found."

FAQ

  • Are all 251 Pokémon obtainable? Yes — confirmed in the thread.
  • How do I get Mew? It wasn't in the game as of that thread; the author said it could be added later if enough people want it.
  • Can I evolve via trade? No need for a trade partner — the Linking Cord item does it, or use the trade item on the Pokémon directly.
  • Do I still need HM slaves? Mostly not. The Pager covers HM use; HMs still work the classic way if you prefer.
  • Are the legendary birds appearing in their spots? There was an acknowledged bug where they didn't; the author fixed it and shipped it in a later release.
  • Will my old Crystal save carry over? Previous save files and PKHeX are no longer compatible. Trading with vanilla Crystal and wild-Pokémon GameShark codes still work.

Things on the list that aren't confirmed

If any of these tip a decision, confirm in-game before relying on them:

  • Are legendaries static encounters, or random? The thread discussed it (players hoped static) but there was no explicit author answer. Not confirmed.
  • Is there a "Round 2" Pokémon League? Not confirmed in the sources.
  • Stats version cutoff. The thread OP says stats go "up to gen9"; the GitHub README says "up to gen7." The sources disagree, so the exact cutoff isn't settled here.
  • 60 FPS support. Not confirmed.

Everything else above traces to the PokeCommunity thread, the SoupPotato/sourcrystal repo, and the release notes — nothing was invented for this article.
